A Vintage Wittnauer Watch Restoration

Welcome back to another Before & After blog spotlight! We have a beautiful vintage timepiece that follows our “We Restore Memories” mission.
This vintage Wittnauer Mechanical Watch was sent in to us in multiple pieces. The owner of the watch had noted that this was actually his father’s old watch that was passed down to him, and that he wanted to pass it down to his nephew for his birthday. He was concerned about if it would make the deadline for his birthday, but fortunately, he sent it in early enough that there was plenty of time to restore it!
The Details of this Vintage Mechanical Watch Restoration
For this vintage Wittnauer watch repair, we had to:
- Perform our standard and free professional evaluation by our expert technicians after noting the repair requests of the customer
- As you may have already known, although we are an online jewelry and watch repair company, we only provide evaluations when our skilled craftsmen can physically asses the items in person at our secure facility
- Perform a Clean & Overhaul of the Vintage Mechanical Movement, which included cleaning, oiling, adjustment, and replacement of worn internal mechanism parts (i.e. balance complete and mainspring) as needed
- We also noted that due to the age and condition of the piece, water resistance could not be guaranteed
- Have our partners Kirk Rich Dial professionally refinish the dial
- Reassemble the entirety of the timepiece
- Monitor and test the watch for 48 to 72 hours for accuracy
And voilà! This beautiful vintage Wittnauer timepiece was restored back to its proper working condition.

What is a Mechanical Wind Up Watch Movement?
Mechanical watches, also known as manual or hand-wound watches, are timeless classics and the oldest type of watch movement. Unlike battery-powered or automatic watches, they rely on a tightly wound mainspring to store and regulate energy, which is transferred through gears to power the movement.
Since they require manual winding, they appeal to collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the intricate craftsmanship and mechanics behind their operation. Often found in high-end, antique, and collectible timepieces, mechanical watches are not just fashion statements but also prized for their horological artistry.
The key difference between mechanical (manual) and automatic (kinetic) watches is that automatic watches are self-winding, using a rotor that moves with the wearer’s wrist to keep the mainspring powered. This rotor also adds weight to the watch, making automatics heavier than their manual counterparts.
