What is a Mechanical Wind Up Watch Movement?
Mechanical watches, also known as “hand-wound” or “manual” watches, are heralded classics and the oldest type of watch movement ever made. Mechanical Wind Up Watch Movements do not utilize a battery nor rotor in its movement for the watch movement to run.
Manual Watch Movements power the watch from a tightly wound spring, or the “mainspring.” This watch spring collects, regulates, and releases energy and tension transferred through its springs and gears. With all these components making up the gear train, this is what keeps the movement of the watch moving, but also requires the watch wearer to manually wind them either by hand or with specific tools.

Mechanical Watch Movements are found in very expensive, antique, and collectible watches. Besides the glorious fashion statements of these pieces, these types of mechanical watches are for those who have a passionate interest in the micro-mechanics of the watch movement itself.
Manual Winding Watch Repair Services
There are several things to consider about when sending in your mechanical watch to be serviced: if you watch is on time, the age of your watch, and the last time you had your watch serviced. Over a certain period of time, your watch needs to have a complete disassembly and overhaul to give your mechanical watch the proper care that it needs. Cleaning and lubrication is necessary and key for having your watch is operating accurately.
What is the difference between a Manual Wind Up and Automatic Mechanical Watch Movement?
One of the key differences between Mechanical Wind Up (Manual) Watches and Automatic (Kinetic) Mechanical Watches is that Automatic Watches are known to be self-winding. Automatic Watches are self-winding due to having a type of rotor that keeps the mainspring moving, which allows the movement itself to keep running with the wrist movement of the watch wearer. The presence of this rotor also tends to make the watch itself heavier. To learn more about this concept look into the Types of Watch Movements.

Not sure what watch service you need?
Not only are Watch Movement Repair Services required after a prolonged period of time after its last service, Watch Movement Repair Services are also mostly likely required after needing Watch Crystal Replacements as tiny glass particles from a cracked Watch Crystal may fall into the many moving parts and gears within the Watch Movement.
There are other Watch Movement Repair Services that include the other types of movements such as:

There are several giveaways to identify what type of Watch Movement that your watch has. One of the easiest ways is to check the text on the back of the case or on the dial; what you can look for is the caliber number engraved within this text. You can either identify the type of movement by the knowledge of how often you wind your watch, or observing the actual movement of the watch hands. If you find yourself winding your watch on the daily, you most likely have a manual mechanical watch movmement.
If you have trouble identifying the type of watch you have and need it serviced, our Certified Watchmakers will be able to do that for you with no problem.

Online Watch Repair by Mail
Your watch puchase decision all depends on the type of maintenance and care you wish to implement on a daily basis. The pros of having a Mechanical Manual or Self-Wound Watch is having a much lighter weight in the absence of a rotor; these types of watches are also for those who have the particular interest and passion for those into the micro-mechanics of the watch movements, especially for watches that have a clear case back that allows the wearer to see the movement.
However, having to self wind your watch on a daily basis is a bit tedious, and only for those who find themselves enjoying this type of maintenance. Additionally, having to wind the movement very often may damage the crown of the watch or the movement itself over time.
