A 14k Gold Pearl & Diamond Earring Restoration with a Friction to Threaded Post Conversion

Professionally Upgrading These Pearl & Diamond Earrings
Welcome back to another Before & After Repair Spotlight! Today, we’re featuring a stunning pair of 14k yellow gold pearl and diamond earrings. These beautiful pieces arrived at our facility equipped with standard friction posts. While friction posts are perfectly fine for everyday wear, the customer wanted to ensure these highly valuable and sentimental earrings had the maximum level of security against accidental loss.
To provide that ultimate peace of mind, our Master Jewelers performed a complete post and back conversion, upgrading the earrings from friction posts to secure threaded posts (often known as screw-backs). Because pearls and diamonds require delicate handling, our team utilized state-of-the-art techniques to seamlessly attach the new 14k yellow gold hardware, ensuring a flawless, factory-new finish without risking any heat damage to the precious gems.
The Details of This Earring Repair
For this 14ky gold pearl and diamond earring conversion, our team performed the following:
- Perform our standard and free professional evaluation by our expert technicians after noting the repair requests of the customer
- As you may have already known, although we are an online jewelry and watch repair company, we only provide evaluations when our skilled craftsmen can physically assess the items in person at our secure facility
- Removing the pearl gemstones from its setting
- Carefully remove the original 14k yellow gold friction posts
- Source brand new 14k yellow gold threaded posts and matching screw-on ear nuts
- Expertly attach the new threaded posts using precision laser welding technology, which allows for a secure bond without transferring dangerous heat to the diamonds
- Resetting the pearls back into the earring settings
- Provide a professional clean and polish to restore the earrings’ original shine
And voilà! These pearl and diamond earrings were fully upgraded—safer, more secure, and brilliantly radiant once again.

The Different Types of Earring Backs & Precision Conversions
When it comes to earrings, the style of the post and back is critical for both comfort and security. Everyday wear can sometimes highlight that a piece’s original hardware just isn’t right for your lifestyle.
There are three main types of earring post systems:
- Friction Earring Posts: The most common type found on basic studs. These use a push-on, pull-off backing held in place by tension and a small notch. They are easy to use but offer the lowest level of security.
- Threaded Earring Posts: Best for higher-value pieces like diamond or pearl studs. These require the ear nut to be screwed on and off, providing a much higher level of protection against accidental loss.
- Secure Lock Backs: The elite standard for valuable heirloom or heavy earrings. These feature a sophisticated double-grooved locking mechanism and often include a stabilizing disc for extra comfort.
If you want to change your earring setup, our Master Jewelers can convert them in no time! Whether you want to upgrade a friction post to a threaded post for added security, or switch from a threaded to a smooth friction post for ease of wear, our experts handle it all.
